He Has Lifted Us

I have been meditating on Psalm 40. I think it brings together several of the words that the Lord has been speaking to us. One of them is Isaiah 54 where He said, “Those who put their hands to the plow do not look back, so it is time to look forward, to gaze at Him.” Another was what Ethan shared at the beginning, That the Lord wanted to give us something today, and that we didn’t have to necessarily feel it, but just to accept it and know that the Lord’s gifting us personally and together.

The word about “now is the time” that we are becoming more and more mature, and being that culture, that environment that gives glory to the Lord and is so different from the world.

He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.

— Psalm 40:2

Right there is just a tremendous, tremendous promise, because I think that is it for each of us today. Because we each have those pits, those kind of quicksand pits that we get stuck in.

It might be guilt. It might be wondering why something did or did not happen. It might be anything that we feel is holding us back from walking forward. So, I believe what He is saying is that He has already taken those things away.

He has lifted us up and set us firmly in the place of Jesus Christ in Him where we can move forward.

Then when we realize that, a new song for a new day rises up in me (v. 3). Ecstatic praise pours out of my mouth until everyone hears how the Lord has set me free. Those are our testimonies that the Lord truly has freed us and that is what other people are so desperate for. They are in the miry pit, and their feet are in the miry clay. They feel stuck and they don’t know what to do. But we know what to do.

We will not fall away because we refuse to listen to the lie of the crowd. Whatever comes against us that is a lie against God, against who He is, and who we are we will not listen to those lies.

He has lifted us up and set us firmly in the place of Jesus Christ in Him where we can move forward.

It is not sacrifice that really moves our hearts. Burnt offerings and sin offerings is not what brings God joy. It is when You open my ears and speak deeply to me then I become your willing servant, your prisoner of love.

Instead of being prisoners of the pit, we are prisoners of His love. Let all who passionately seek the Lord erupt in excitement and joy over what He has done. Let all who are His lovers continually rejoice and say, How great and glorious is our God!

I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.

He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.

He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who makes
the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
to those who go astray after a lie!

You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;
none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
yet they are more than can be told.

In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
but you have given me an open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering
you have not required

— Psalm 40:1-6
